When you become benefits-eligible, you can cover yourself and the following dependents:

  • Spouse, unless divorced
  • Registered domestic partner
  • Unmarried child(ren) under age 19
  • Unmarried child(ren) under age 25 if a full-time student in an accredited school or college
  • Unmarried disabled child(ren) of any age who is unable to earn a living due to their disability, as long as:
    • The child was eligible for coverage and disabled before age 19
    • You furnished proof of disability before the child reached age 19

Eligible children include:

  • Natural children
  • Stepchildren
  • Legally adopted children
  • Children for whom you are the legal guardian
  • Children placed with you for adoption
  • Children of your Registered Domestic Partner who depend on you for support and who live with you in a regular parent/child relationship
  • Child for whom the court has issued a Qualified Medical Child Support Order (QMCSO)

Note: In addition to meeting the requirements above, a dependent is eligible for coverage only if he or she is:

  • A citizen or national of the United States
  • A resident of the United States, Canada or Mexico
  • The child of an employee who is a citizen or national of the United States (the child must reside with the employee and be a member of the employee’s household)

Your dependents must be enrolled before benefits are paid. To enroll your dependents, you must furnish the required documentation (e.g., a marriage certificate for your spouse; birth certificates or adoption papers for your children; your notarized Declaration of Domestic Partnership for your domestic partner, etc.). Refer to the Enrollment section for more information.
